Tierpark Berlin elephant undergoes emergency tusk surgery

A two-year-old elephant bull named Simon at Tierpark Berlin underwent emergency surgery after breaking a tusk while playing. The injury was classified as a medical emergency because the sensitive living tooth pulp was exposed.

To preserve the possibility of future tusk growth, Belgian veterinary dentistry specialist Yves Debosschere traveled to Berlin to perform a pulp capping procedure. The surgery, conducted under general anesthesia, involved using approximately twenty times the amount of filling material required for a human dental procedure due to the scale of the tusk.

Following the successful operation on October 12, 2026, Simon has recovered and has been reunited with his mother, Tana. While veterinarians noted that long-term guarantees for normal tusk regrowth cannot be provided, they expressed confidence in the procedure's success. Simon remains under observation and is receiving pain medication.
