Berliner Ensemble premieres theatrical adaptation of ‘Warten auf’n Bus’
The Berliner Ensemble has premiered a theatrical adaptation of the cult series ‘Warten auf’n Bus’. Written by Oliver Bukowski and Hannah Zufall, the production brings the characters Hannes and Ralle—two long-term unemployed friends from Brandenburg—to the stage.
The production features a detailed set including a rusted bus stop, a DDR-era streetlamp, and an apple tree. While the staging by Max Hopp is noted for its striking visual elements, some critiques suggest that the transition to theater may have caused the original series' blend of melancholy and subtle humor to be lost in favor of more exaggerated performances.
The story follows the two protagonists as they discuss social and political themes, including the pursuit of individual freedom versus market value and the modern phenomenon of podcasting, which they attempt to launch from their makeshift bus stop studio.
