Berlin's Checkpoint Charlie yields historical border remains
Archaeological excavations at the former Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin have uncovered historical remains of the East German (DDR) border fortifications. The findings include sections of boundary walls, asphalt surfaces, and the foundation of a command post used by DDR border troops between 1985 and 1989.
Additionally, researchers discovered parts of a vehicle barrier that had been erected following the tank confrontation in October 1961. Susanne Muhle, head of research at the Berlin Wall Foundation, described the finds as “significant historical evidence” of the former border crossing and the Allied checkpoint.
The excavations took place at the corner of Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße as part of planning for a new educational and memorial site. To ensure preservation, the exposed areas are scheduled to be reburied following further inspections.
