Bermuda Government clarifies work permit and immigration policy

The Government of Bermuda has issued a clarification regarding its work permit and immigration policies, citing an ageing population and a shrinking workforce as the primary challenges to the local labour market. While the economy continues to show growth in sectors such as tourism, construction, and international business, the demand for workers is currently exceeding the available local supply.

To address this, the government is implementing measures to balance economic growth with the protection of local employment. Key policy actions include expanding the list of closed occupations where work permits are unavailable, increasing the number of restricted occupations that require proof of local recruitment efforts, and reserving summer internships and employment exclusively for Bermudians.

Minister of Economy and Labour Jason Hayward stated that the immigration policy aims to strike a balance between filling vacancies and supporting long-term workforce development.
