Bern implements new security measures for bicycle stations

Starting November 2, 2026, the city of Bern will introduce new operating hours and security protocols for its municipal bicycle stations. Most locations will undergo nightly closures to improve security, with exceptions for the Welle 7 station, which will remain accessible 24/7. Weekday closures will occur from 01:45 to 05:00, while weekend closures will run from 02:30 to 05:00. These times are coordinated with SBB train schedules to ensure travelers arriving on late trains can still access their bicycles.

In addition to the new hours, the city is implementing a revised access system. Users will no longer need to request access codes from staff; instead, they can scan a QR code at the station door to receive a code via SMS. This system allows for more frequent code changes to prevent unauthorized access. At the Postparc, Schanzenbrücke, and Bollwerk stations, access codes will be required starting at 21:15. Furthermore, the city plans to install surveillance cameras across all municipal bicycle stations by the end of the year.
