Switzerland protests erupt in Zurich and Basel

Unauthorized youth protests led to violent clashes with police in the Swiss cities of Zurich and Basel on a Saturday night. Participants, some wearing Halloween masks, organized demonstrations under slogans such as “We have had enough – in Switzerland too,” drawing parallels to recent youth movements in France and other European nations.

In Zurich, several hundred demonstrators gathered near Langstrasse and Helvetiaplatz. The situation escalated as protesters erected barricades using trash containers, electric bicycles, and scooters, which were subsequently set on fire. A vehicle was also burned. Protesters reportedly attacked law enforcement with stones, bottles, and pyrotechnics, prompting police to respond with water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets. During the unrest, a police patrol attempting to assist a severely injured teenager following an accident was reportedly attacked, forcing officers to withdraw.

In Basel, approximately 150 people participated in an unauthorized march through the city center. Protesters set fire to barricades made of metal obstacles and waste containers near the St. Johann district. The demonstrations caused temporary disruptions to public transport and local traffic before police intervened to restore order.
