Bern police launch manhunt for stadium pyrotechnics suspects

Authorities in Bern have launched a multi-stage public manhunt following pyrotechnic incidents at the Wankdorf stadium during a June 2025 football match between FC Biel-Bienne and FC Basel. Four suspects are believed to have ignited hand flares and firecrackers within the crowd, risking serious injury to bystanders.

The Bern-Mittelland regional prosecutor has ordered a three-step identification process. On September 10, 2026, the Bern Cantonal Police will release obscured images of the suspects. If no leads are provided within one week, unmasked photographs will be published on September 17, 2026.

In a separate incident involving pyrotechnics, the Swiss Football League has opened disciplinary proceedings against FC Zürich and Grasshopper Club Zürich following an excessive display of fireworks during a recent derby. The league is investigating the use of pyrotechnics by supporters of both clubs and anticipates potential fines in the mid-to-high five-figure range.
