Bern vehicle fires prompt investigations and evacuations
Two separate vehicle fires occurred in the Bern region in late October 2026.
On Friday, October 23, a car caught fire in the underground garage of a shopping center on Kasparstrasse in Bern. The incident, which began shortly before 8:10 PM, led to the evacuation of the shopping center. While the shopping center has since reopened, the underground garage remains closed due to damage. The fire completely destroyed one vehicle and potentially damaged seven others. Emergency responders included 35 members of the Bern professional fire department and two ambulance teams. Investigators are focusing on a technical problem in the engine area as the likely cause.
Earlier that week, on Wednesday, October 21, a parked vehicle was destroyed by fire on Talbodenstrasse in Schliern bei Köniz. The fire, which started shortly after 2:00 AM, damaged a second vehicle due to heat. The Köniz fire department extinguished the blaze, and no injuries were reported. The Bern-Mittelland regional prosecutor's office is leading the investigation, and authorities have stated that arson cannot be ruled out. Police are currently seeking witnesses to the incident.
