Berna Laçin detained over social media post

Turkish actress Berna Laçin has been detained following an investigation launched by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. The legal action stems from a social media post in which Laçin wrote, “İzmir daha önce de işgal edildi, Korkma!” (“İzmir was occupied before, Do not fear!”).

Authorities are investigating the post under Article 216 of the Turkish Penal Code, which covers “inciting the public to hatred and hostility or insulting the public.” The prosecutor's office is evaluating whether the statement is capable of disturbing public peace.

Under the relevant statute, individuals found guilty of inciting hatred based on social class, race, religion, sect, gender, or regional differences can face one to three years in prison, while those found guilty of insulting such groups may face six months to one year of imprisonment. The legal process will continue as authorities determine whether to issue an indictment following the completion of the investigation.
