Bernadette Greene-Placentia reports sexual assault during campaign

Bernadette Greene-Placentia, the Democratic candidate for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, has reported being sexually assaulted by two men. The incident allegedly occurred around 2 a.m. on August 14, 2026, in a parking lot in Sun City while she was repairing a damaged campaign sign.

Greene-Placentia stated that she was struck in the head, causing her to lose consciousness, and woke to find herself being assaulted. She described experiencing bruising and memory loss following the attack. She noted that she delayed reporting the crime to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office until August 31, citing embarrassment and a desire to forget the event.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that an investigation into the report is currently active. While the candidate expressed that the attack might have been a crime of opportunity, she also noted that the assailants may have recognized her due to her campaign materials.

Republican opponent Abe Hamadeh has called for a thorough investigation, including a review of any available surveillance footage. Arizona Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego have expressed support for Greene-Placentia, calling for accountability for those responsible.
