Bernal Community Park faces criticism over development
The 500-acre Bernal Community Park in Pleasanton is facing criticism regarding its current state and original development goals. Since the city took possession of the property in 2007, the area has remained largely undeveloped, consisting primarily of open space and pathways.
Critics note that the park lacks shade, picnic lawns, and functional ponds, often appearing as an unattractive, dry area for most of the year. While the original vision included sports fields and commercial properties, the current landscape of dead grasses and weeds is seen by some as failing to meet the city's mission. Suggestions for improvement range from modest additions, such as small shaded lawn areas, to more ambitious projects modeled after Golden Gate Park, which would require installing reclaimed water lines to support greenery and gardens.
