Bernard Antwi Boasiako seeks bail pending appeal of 20‑year sentence

Ashanti Regional Chairman of Ghana's New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (known as Wontumi), was convicted of illegal mining and sentenced to 20 years in prison. On 5 August 2026 he filed a High Court application for bail pending the determination of his appeal, arguing grounds set out in an accompanying affidavit.

The motion, signed by his lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea of Zoe, Akyea & Co., names Akonta Mining Company Limited as a third appellant and notes that co‑accused Kwame Antwi remains at large. Copies were served on the Office of the Attorney‑General and the Director of Nsawam Medium Security Prison, where Wontumi is currently held. A hearing is scheduled for 19 August 2026 before Criminal Division 4 of the High Court in Accra.
