Bernardo Arévalo discusses democratization challenges in Guatemala

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo addressed the challenges of democratization during the XXVII Juridical Social Congress, Democracy, and Rule of Law, organized by the Colegio de Abogados y Notarios de Guatemala (CANG).

Arévalo emphasized that true democratization requires three processes: the integration of social trust networks into public life, the decoupling of political influence from social inequalities such as poverty, gender, or ethnicity, and the reduction of autonomous power centers, including criminal organizations and armed groups, to ensure the rule of law prevails. He noted that advanced democracies are characterized by strong states capable of subjecting interest groups to the law, which often correlates with national prosperity.
