Bernardo O'Higgins: Commemorations and historical insights in Chile

Chile is commemorating the 248th anniversary of the birth of Bernardo O'Higgins, the nation's founding father. Various regions, including Ñuble, Biobío, and the Metropolitan Region, are hosting events to honor his legacy and the independence process.

Records from the O'Higgins Archive indicate that while he was baptized as Bernardo O'Higgins in Talca in 1783, he likely used the name Bernardo Riquelme before legitimizing his lineage. Documentation suggests his father, Ambrosio O'Higgins, may have withheld the surname to protect political ambitions or due to social prohibitions regarding relationships between high-ranking officials and subjects of the kingdom.
