Bernhard Nocht Institute leads new malaria and bacterial infection research project

An international research consortium led by the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) has launched the ‘FACT’ project to combat severe malaria and bacterial bloodstream infections in children across sub-Saharan Africa. The initiative aims to develop a combination therapy using three existing medications—fosmidomycin, artesunate, and clindamycin—administered as an infusion to treat both malaria and bacterial infections simultaneously.

Supported by approximately ten million euros from the European Partnership for Clinical Trials in Developing Countries (EDCTP), the five-year project involves collaboration with the University of Tübingen, the Centre de Recherches Médicales de Lambaréné (CERMEL) in Gabon, the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR) in Ghana, and the Deutsche Malaria GmbH. Clinical trials to determine optimal dosage, efficacy, and safety will be conducted in Gabon, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ethiopia.
