Bernie Ecclestone detained in Portugal after shotgun found in private jet
Bernie Ecclestone, the 95-year-old former head of Formula 1, was detained following a routine inspection at the Tires Aerodrome in Cascais, Portugal. Authorities discovered a shotgun in his private jet after it landed from Switzerland.
Ecclestone stated the firearm was intended for clay pigeon shooting and claimed he possesses licensed weapons in Switzerland. However, he admitted to not carrying the required documentation, specifically the “blue book,” necessary for transporting the weapon into Portugal. While some reports indicated a formal arrest, Ecclestone denied being detained, describing the hours-long encounter with customs and police as a “calvary” or a complication that was eventually resolved.
His wife, Fabiana Flosi, reportedly assisted in regularizing the situation by traveling to Lisbon to handle the weapon's delivery or documentation. This incident marks the second time in four years that the businessman has faced issues with firearms at an airport, following a 2022 incident in Brazil involving a .32 caliber pistol.
