U.S. Senators demand human rights report on Venezuela
Democratic Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Adam Schiff have sent a formal letter to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanding an assessment of human rights violations in Venezuela. The legislators are specifically requesting an evaluation of abuses occurring under the interim presidency of Delcy Rodríguez.
The senators expressed concern that human rights violations have not diminished despite U.S. involvement in Venezuelan affairs. They urged the State Department to reaffirm its commitment to denouncing these abuses and to take measures to prevent future occurrences.
Furthermore, the lawmakers warned that Congress will maintain oversight of administration initiatives supporting the Rodríguez government. They indicated they may utilize legal mechanisms, including Section 502B of the Foreign Assistance Act, to demand the requested report, a provision that prohibits support for governments maintaining a consistent pattern of serious human rights violations.
