Bernie Sanders threatens Senate action over AI development

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has issued a formal letter to prominent AI leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei, urging a pause in artificial intelligence development. Sanders stated that if these leaders do not take appropriate action in the interest of humanity, he and his colleagues in the Senate will intervene through legislative means.

The call for caution aligns with a recent manifesto signed by 200 scientists, including 17 Nobel laureates, titled ‘We Need to Act Now’. The group warns that the impact of AI may surpass that of the Industrial Revolution, necessitating an economic transition that prioritizes human-complementary technology over human-competitive models to mitigate risks to workers and social stability.

Controversy also surrounds Mark Zuckerberg’s recent public stance on AI. While he has published manifestos advocating for open AI models, critics and former Meta executives have pointed to a disconnect between his rhetoric and the company’s internal practices. Former Meta Vice President of Civil Rights Roy L. Austin noted that while Zuckerberg promotes AI benefits, the company has previously prioritized efficiency by replacing non-engineering staff with automated processes and reducing workforce size.
