Bernio Verhagen: The footballer who used deception to sign with professional clubs

A new documentary series titled ‘De Spookvoetballer’ explores the case of Bernio Verhagen, a man who successfully deceived multiple professional football clubs using a fabricated identity. Despite lacking significant talent, Verhagen managed to sign with four professional clubs by age 25, including stints in Moldova and South Africa.

The investigation reveals that Verhagen’s deception extended beyond the football pitch, involving a web of lies, manipulation, and violence that affected his family, friends, and acquaintances. The documentary, hosted by journalist Sam van Raalte, details how Verhagen utilized a false persona to navigate the international football world and also highlights his involvement in other criminal activities, such as credit card fraud.
