Berry Leenders: Funds raised for security guard killed in Overasselt

More than 12,000 euros have been raised for the funeral of Berry Leenders, a 51-year-old security guard from Wijchen who was fatally shot during a violent incident in Overasselt. Because Leenders did not have funeral insurance, a crowdfunding campaign was launched to cover his final expenses, with the target amount recently increased to 20,000 euros.

Leenders was well-known in his community and had a long-standing relationship with the Nijmegen student association Carolus Magnus, where he worked as a security guard for decades. He was also a frequent visitor and helper at the St. Frans equestrian center in Alverna.

At the time of his death, Leenders was working security at a residence in Overasselt that had previously been a target of violence and threats. While he was aware of the history of the location, those close to him noted he did not consider the specific assignment to be particularly dangerous. Police are continuing their investigation into the shooting.
