Berry Leenders memorial canceled due to safety concerns

The memorial service for Berry Leenders, a 51-year-old security guard killed during a shooting in Overasselt, has been canceled by the student association Carolus Magnus due to safety concerns.

Leenders was killed on Tuesday while guarding the residence of Jan G. during an incident where an armed group stormed the property. Leenders, a long-time security guard for the Carolus Magnus society in Nijmegen, was shot and died at the scene.

While the association cited safety considerations for the cancellation, they did not specify if there was a concrete threat. Police stated they had not issued a negative advisory for the event, but noted that the association was unable to arrange sufficient security for the large number of expected attendees. The municipality was not involved in the decision to cancel.
