Berry Picker Am Saisuk Survives Bear Attack in Lycksele, Sweden

On a rainy Friday in the forest north‑west of Lycksele, 46‑year‑old berry picker Am Saisuk was attacked by a mother bear protecting her cubs. The bear bit her three times before she played dead, causing the animal to cease its assault. She was rescued by fellow pickers and taken to Umeå hospital, where she underwent surgery for head and hand injuries. Saisuk, who has lived in Sweden for nearly 20 years with her Thai partner Sunan Phiankham, is expected to be transferred to a closer hospital within a few days. Police have opened a workplace‑accident investigation and, after the incident, decided to euthanise the bear, though the animal has not yet been located.
