Bertelsmann Stiftung study shows improving social cohesion in Germany
A new study by the Bertelsmann Stiftung suggests that social cohesion in Germany is showing signs of recovery, despite high levels of political polarization. While recent election results for parties like the AfD and Die Linke reflect a divided political landscape, the Religionsmonitor 2026 indicates that social relationships and civic engagement have improved.
The study reports a social cohesion index of 51 out of 100 points, an increase from 46 points in 2023, though it remains below the 55 points recorded in 2020. Despite the improvement in daily social interactions, the data highlights persistent weaknesses in public trust toward the federal government and a lack of perceived economic justice.
