Besançon RN57 roadwork begins with preparatory tree removal
Preparatory work has commenced on the RN57 in Besançon, France, as part of a larger project to complete the city's western bypass. Starting October 27, 2026, operations will focus on clearing land between the l’Amitié and Planoise interchanges, specifically targeting the Saint-Ferjeux interchange for total remodeling.
The initial phase involves tree removal, which is expected to last approximately three weeks. To ensure user safety, much of this work will be conducted at night through successive closures of affected ramps. These preparatory steps precede a major decade-long development project scheduled to begin in 2027, which includes widening the RN57, upgrading the Saint-Ferjeux interchange, and creating dedicated lanes and structures for public transport and active travel, such as pedestrian and cycling paths.
Environmental measures are in place to protect local wildlife. An ecologist will oversee the tree removal to monitor for bat habitats before hibernation periods. Additionally, the felled wood will be repurposed for energy use in local community heating plants.
