Besim Krasniqi escapes return to Idrizovo Prison
Besim Krasniqi, a convicted criminal serving a 28.5-year sentence, has failed to return to Idrizovo Prison following a court-approved 30-day medical leave. Krasniqi, who was extradited from Kosovo in May 2024, was granted the temporary release after medical specialists recommended additional examinations and potential surgery that could not be performed within prison conditions.
Following the expiration of the 30-day period, Krasniqi applied for an extension, but the Skopje Criminal Court rejected his request on June 16, ruling that the provided medical documentation did not justify further treatment outside of a correctional facility. An appeal was also denied. On July 10, prison authorities notified the court that the convict had not returned.
In response to his disappearance, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has issued a central warrant for his arrest. Krasniqi has a history of failing to return to prison following authorized absences, which previously led to an international warrant. He was originally convicted for multiple serious offenses, including robbery, crimes against public security, and activities related to preparing terrorism.
