BESIX Watpac chosen to build Tasmania's Macquarie Point Stadium

BESIX Watpac has been selected to build the Macquarie Point Stadium in Hobart, Tasmania. The 23,000-seat roofed venue is intended to be the home of the Tasmania Devils AFL and AFLW clubs.

The project, currently estimated at $1.13 billion, is expected to be completed for the 2031 AFL season. Funding for the stadium includes an $875 million cap from the Tasmanian government, $240 million from the federal government, and $15 million from the AFL.

The stadium project has been a source of political division due to rising state budget debt. Opponents have expressed concerns that the final costs may exceed current estimates. While the Tasmanian parliament requested updated costings in May, the government declined to release them, citing the ongoing tender process.
