BESS Lipnice launches as Czech Republic's largest battery storage facility

The largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Czech Republic has commenced operations in the Sokolov region. Located at the site of the former village of Lipnice u Vintířova, the BESS Lipnice facility has an installed capacity of 120 MWh and a power output of 57 MW.

The project is a collaboration between the SUAS GROUP and the Slovak group EIF. The facility is designed to maintain the stability of the Czech electricity grid, provide support services for ČEPS, and facilitate energy arbitrage on daily and intraday markets. According to Miroslav Rohla, a board member of BESS Lipnice, the storage capacity is sufficient to power a city the size of Sokolov for approximately ten hours.

Pavel Tomek, chairman of the supervisory board of Sokolovská uhelná and SUAS GROUP, noted that this represents a significant milestone for energy infrastructure in the Karlovy Vary region. Plans are already underway for a subsequent project with similar capacity at the Tisová Power Plant site.
