BEST workers in Mumbai launch hunger strike over wage disputes
BEST workers in Mumbai have launched an indefinite hunger strike to protest unresolved labor demands. The union is seeking the settlement of two pending wage agreements covering 2016–21 and 2021–26, the implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission, and salary parity with BMC employees. Additional demands include equal pay for wet-lease workers and financial support to maintain the bus fleet.
Despite the agitation, bus services have remained largely functional. The union opted for a hunger strike rather than a full work stoppage to avoid inconveniencing daily commuters. Data indicates that bus availability has remained comparable to previous days, with some reports showing an increase in operating buses during the protest period.
In a separate development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a ₹28,000-crore redevelopment plan for 22 BEST bus depots. This project will utilize a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model intended to modernize facilities and assist in the financial recovery of the transport service.
