Beta Pictoris b: First direct radio signal detected from exoplanet
An international team of astrophysicists, led by Kevin Ortiz Ceballos of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian and the University of Oregon, has achieved the first direct detection of radio emissions from an exoplanet. The signals were traced to Beta Pictoris b, a massive gas giant located approximately 64 light-years from Earth.
Using the MeerKAT radio telescope array in South Africa, researchers identified repeating, strongly circularly polarized radio bursts. By using distant quasars as fixed reference points, the team successfully distinguished the planetary signals from the much brighter radio noise of the host star. The emissions are attributed to natural auroral activity, driven by the electron cyclotron maser instability (ECMI) as charged particles interact with the planet's atmosphere and magnetic field.
This discovery allowed for the first direct measurement of an exoplanet's magnetic field, estimated at a staggering 1,250 gauss—nearly 291 times stronger than Jupiter's field. Beta Pictoris b is roughly 12 times more massive than Jupiter and completes a rotation every eight to nine hours. The findings, currently in preprint form, provide a new method for studying the environments and protective magnetic shields of distant worlds.
