Betfred to close 132 UK betting shops and cut 600 jobs
Betfred, the Warrington‑based bookmaker, announced a consultation to shut 132 of its UK betting shops – roughly a tenth of its network – and to cut about 600 positions. The closures will leave the chain with around 1,100 outlets nationwide. The company cited a combination of higher employer National Insurance contributions, wage inflation, increased gambling taxes and broader economic uncertainty as making the retail estate unsustainable. CEO Jo Whittaker said the shops are “well‑run” and that the firm has tried to protect sites and staff but the fiscal and regulatory environment left no choice. The moves follow recent UK budget measures that raised remote gaming duty from 21% to 40% and introduced a new 25% online sports betting duty from 2027, covering all sports except horse racing. Rival operators such as Paddy Power and William Hill have also reduced their high‑street footprints in response to the same tax pressures.
