Beth Dobbin retires from sprinting due to ME/CFS
Former British Olympic sprinter Beth Dobbin has been forced to end her athletic career at age 32 due to Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).
Dobbin, who competed in the Tokyo Olympics, reported that her health declined following viral infections, including COVID-19 and mononucleosis. Her condition has become so severe that she spends approximately 22 hours a day in bed. She noted that even minor physical or mental activities, such as long conversations or exposure to bright light, can trigger a “crash,” a state where symptoms worsen significantly and can last for months.
The case highlights the debilitating nature of ME/CFS, a complex chronic illness characterized by extreme exhaustion, pain, and sleep disturbances that can drastically alter a person's quality of life.
