Beth Hammack calls for immediate Fed rate hikes to combat inflation
Beth Hammack, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, has called for immediate interest rate hikes to combat persistent inflation and return it to the 2% target. Speaking in Dayton, Ohio, Hammack argued that current monetary policy is not sufficiently restrictive to curb price pressures.
She noted that businesses remain eager to borrow and invest, a dynamic that could lead to overheating and additional inflationary pressure. Hammack characterized the labor market as stable, with unemployment rates between 4.1% and 4.3% providing enough resilience to absorb tighter policy.
Hammack warned that delaying action risks causing greater economic pain for individuals and businesses in the long term. She cited anecdotal evidence of widespread inflation, including rising retail prices and increased reliance on food banks, as justification for a more hawkish stance.
