Bethesda brings uncensored Return to Castle Wolfenstein to Germany
Bethesda Deutschland has announced that the uncensored version of the 2001 first-person shooter Return to Castle Wolfenstein will finally be available in Germany. For 25 years, the game was released in the country with significant modifications to comply with strict national laws regarding the representation of Nazi symbols and historical figures.
To avoid bans, previous versions replaced historical references with fictional ones, such as changing the name of Heinrich Himmler to Heinrich Höller and substituting Third Reich elements with the Wolf Clan. Following the relaxation of German regulations in 2018, the original, unedited content can now be distributed. The game is currently available on platforms such as Steam.
