Bethlehem Mayor Criticizes Officer Quitting to Join Love Island USA

Mayor William Reynolds of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, condemned police officer Sean Reifel for resigning less than a year after being sworn in to appear in season 8 of “Love Island USA.” Reynolds said the department had invested “significant time and taxpayer money” in Reifel’s training and warned that his departure creates another vacancy that won’t be filled until next year.

Police Chief Michelle Kott echoed the disappointment, calling the move “a bad look” and noting that departments nationwide are struggling to fill positions. Reifel’s final day on duty was May 20, shortly before the June 2 premiere of the reality show, where he was quickly paired with Paralympian Beatriz Hatz.

The incident highlights tensions between public‑service commitments and personal career choices, especially amid ongoing police staffing challenges in the United States.
