Betong community leader roles proposed for expansion and restructuring

Community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK) in the Betong Division are being proposed for structural expansion and restructuring to better serve growing populations and changing demographic needs. Deputy Minister of Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Dr Mohammad Razi bin Sitam, noted that the review aims to ensure adequate leadership coverage and improved government service delivery at the grassroots level.

There are currently 663 KMKK members in Betong, consisting of 50 community leaders and 613 village chiefs. Their responsibilities include communicating government policies, managing community welfare, safety, disaster management, land matters, and infrastructure development. They also play a critical role in disaster response, such as identifying risks and managing temporary evacuation centers.

To recognize their responsibilities, the Sarawak Government approved an increase in monthly allowances for KMKK members effective January 1, 2024. Under this adjustment, Temenggong allowances rose to RM2,000, Pemanca to RM1,700, Penghulu to RM1,500, and village chiefs to RM1,300.
