Betting companies expand cultural sponsorship in Brazil
Online betting companies are increasingly funding cultural projects in Brazil through direct sponsorship and the Lei Rouanet tax incentive law. Companies like Superbet have invested heavily in major events, including Rock in Rio, Lollapalooza, and Rio de Janeiro's Carnival, with Superbet reporting nearly R$ 150 million in cultural sponsorships over the last two years.
This trend has created a dilemma for artists who must choose between securing essential funding and associating their image with controversial gambling practices. Some artists and movements, such as 342 Artes, have launched campaigns like “Block no Tigrinho” to warn against the risks of betting. At certain events, such as the Village festival in Rio de Janeiro, sponsorship logos were even covered during performances to mitigate controversy.
Authorities are responding to the rise of these platforms by increasing oversight and considering stricter regulations. If advertising restrictions are implemented, betting executives warn that large-scale investments in major metropolitan events may become unfeasible.
