Betway Premiership players face extreme wage inequality

A significant wage disparity has been revealed within South Africa’s Betway Premiership, where professional football players face extreme financial inequality. During an interview on Metro FM’s ‘Sports Night Amplified’, football agent Karabo Mathang-Tshabuse disclosed that while elite players can command monthly salaries approaching R800,000, some professional players are earning as little as R4,000 per month.

Mathang-Tshabuse noted that these low-end contracts place athletes below national living standards and even below legal sectoral minimum wage benchmarks. The agent questioned whether individuals earning such amounts should even be classified as professional players.

The disparity is attributed to the absence of a mandated minimum wage within the league's administrative structure, unlike other professional sports in South Africa such as rugby and cricket, which have established baseline protections and rookie frameworks.
