Beuerberg Monastery installs new church bells after three years of silence

The Beuerberg Monastery in the Pfaffenwinkel region of Bavaria has installed four new church bells, ending three years of silence in the St. Peter and Paul church tower. The new bells are freshly cast, an event Pastor Bernhard Häglsperger described as a “once-in-a-century event,” noting that such bells can remain functional for 400 to 500 years.

The bells were brought to the village via horse-drawn carriages in a festive procession accompanied by brass music. On Sunday, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, the Archbishop of Munich and Freising, performed the formal consecration during a festive service.

The replacement was necessitated by a safety crisis in 2023 when two bolts on the largest 4.4-ton bell snapped, creating an immediate danger of the bell falling. For the local community, the return of the bell tolls represents both a religious reconnection and a significant sense of home.
