Bezos Earth Fund allocates $25 million for Pacific ocean conservation
The Bezos Earth Fund has announced $25 million in new grants dedicated to ocean conservation across the Pacific. This funding is part of a $100 million commitment to the ‘Unlocking Blue Pacific Prosperity’ initiative, which aims to protect at least 30 percent of the region’s waters by 2030.
The grants will support various conservation projects in the Cook Islands, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, and Vanuatu. Specific efforts include establishing Papua New Guinea’s first large offshore marine protected area, expanding protections in Tonga, and advancing the Cook Islands’ Marae Moana vision. Additionally, the environmental organization Rare will receive funding to assist Pacific governments in developing marine protected area proposals for international waters under the UN High Seas Treaty.
This latest round brings the total amount committed to the Pacific program to $63.3 million. The initiative is part of Jeff Bezos’ broader $10 billion philanthropic pledge to fight climate change and protect nature.
