BGE proposes $9 monthly surcharge for Baltimore customers

Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) has submitted a proposal to the Maryland Public Service Commission requesting a monthly surcharge of approximately $9 for Baltimore City customers. The utility aims to recover costs stemming from a decision by Baltimore city officials to increase conduit franchise fees.

City officials proposed raising the fee for the underground conduit system, which houses electrical infrastructure, to $4.05 per linear foot. Mayor Brandon Scott stated the updated fee structure is intended to support investments in city infrastructure.

BGE President and CEO Tamla Olivier criticized the move, describing the 84% fee increase as a “money grab” that would cost the company roughly $50 million annually. The company expressed concerns regarding a lack of transparency concerning how the city will utilize the additional revenue.

While the current proposal targets only Baltimore City residents, BGE indicated that if regulators reject the request, the company may pursue an alternative $2.20 monthly surcharge applicable to all BGE customers.
