Bharatendu Harishchandra honored on birth anniversary

Indian political leaders and officials paid tribute to Bharatendu Harishchandra on his birth anniversary, honoring him as the ‘father of modern Hindi literature.’ Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and various Chief Ministers, including Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh and Bhajan Lal Sharma of Rajasthan, recognized his role in connecting the Hindi language with modern consciousness, national pride, and social issues.

Born in Banaras on September 9, 1850, Harishchandra made significant contributions to poetry, drama, journalism, and prose during his 34-year life. His work often addressed themes of national identity, social reform, and the struggles of common people under colonial rule. His notable plays include ‘Bharat Durdasha’, ‘Neel Devi’, ‘Satya Harishchandra’, and ‘Andher Nagari’. Beyond Hindi, he also wrote Urdu ghazals under the pen name ‘Rasa’ and played a pivotal role in strengthening modern Hindi prose and journalism through publications such as ‘Kavivachan Sudha’ and ‘Harishchandra Magazine’.
