Bharrat Jagdeo marks anniversary of Guyana’s democratic restoration

Guyanese Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo marked the 34th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in Guyana, noting that the October 5, 1992, elections were a pivotal moment in the nation’s history.

Jagdeo stated that the victory of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) ended 28 years of rule by the People’s National Congress (PNC). He argued that this transition established the foundation for an independent judiciary, a stronger Parliament, a free press, and a new Constitution.

Beyond political shifts, Jagdeo credited the restoration of democracy with allowing Guyana to rebuild its economy through debt reduction, sound management, and long-term planning. He noted that these factors contributed to advancements in health, education, and housing.

However, Jagdeo warned that democracy must not be taken for granted, citing the 2020 General and Regional Elections as an instance where political actors, specifically the APNU/AFC, attempted to overturn the electorate's will. He pledged that the PPP/C would remain vigilant in protecting democratic freedoms and pursuing national development.
