Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket leads recovery of businesses damaged in Gen Z movement

Major commercial establishments in Nepal, including the Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket chain and the Nepali Rika Hotel, are recovering following significant damage caused by the Gen Z movement last year.

Bhat-Bhateni, the country’s largest supermarket chain, suffered extensive losses with 21 of its 28 outlets damaged through vandalism, looting, or fire. Twelve stores were completely destroyed by fire. Currently, 17 outlets have resumed operations, including eight of the burned locations. The company is working to reopen remaining damaged sites in Dharan, Naxal, Hetauda, and Damak by the end of Ashoj. As part of its recovery, the chain is transitioning toward an “international model,” which includes introducing nighttime services.

Similarly, the Nepali Rika Hotel in Morang, which faced total destruction due to arson and looting fueled by rumors, has successfully resumed operations. Despite losing significant assets, including dozens of televisions and gas cylinders, the hotel was rebuilt and reopened within months of the incident.
