Bhavanisagar Dam water release ordered for 15 days in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu government has ordered the release of water from the Bhavanisagar Dam into the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal system for a period of 15 days. This decision follows protests by farmers in the Erode district who were demanding immediate water supplies to protect their crops.

Erode District Collector Kandasamy announced the special irrigation arrangement based on reports from the Water Resources Department. The water release is expected to benefit approximately 1,300 acres of agricultural land. To manage the limited water supply, the release will be conducted through the odd-numbered sluice gates of the Lower Bhavani main canal and the Chennasamudram distribution canal.

Prior to this announcement, uncertainty had grown among local farmers because the dam's water level had fallen below 60 feet. While the decision provides immediate relief, farmers have expressed ongoing concerns regarding water availability for the remainder of the agricultural season and have called for strict monitoring to prevent waste or diversion.
