Bhavnagar spurious liquor crisis leaves seven dead and dozens hospitalized

A deadly spurious liquor crisis in the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat has resulted in at least seven deaths and left approximately 30 people hospitalized. The victims reportedly consumed counterfeit Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) sold in bottles bearing the Royal Stag brand label.

Investigations by the Bhavnagar police and the State Monitoring Cell indicate that the toxic liquor was manufactured and brought from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, before being distributed in Bhavnagar and surrounding areas. Chemical analysis of a seized bottle revealed a high methanol content of 38.59 percent. The incident appears to have originated during a gathering in Kharkhadi village in the Ghogha taluka.

Authorities have registered an FIR against 21 individuals and detained 12 suspected bootleggers. In response to the incident, four police personnel have been suspended. Medical teams from Sir Takhtsinhji General Hospital and Ahmedabad's IKDRC have been deployed to monitor patients receiving treatment.
