A four‑storey residential building, the Kohinoor Building in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra, partially collapsed late on 31 July 2026, around 11 p.m. The structure, which had 48 rooms (12 per floor), had earlier been declared dangerous (Category C) by the Bhiwandi‑Nizampur Municipal Corporation, yet repair work was in progress.

The collapse killed nine people and left several others trapped under the debris. Rescue teams led by the National Disaster Response Force, assisted by local fire, police and disaster‑response units, continue search‑and‑rescue operations. An Assistant Commandant of the NDRF was injured during the effort. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex‑gratia of Rs 2 lakh for each deceased's next‑of‑kin and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered an FIR and strict action against those responsible, and the state government pledged financial assistance to the victims' families.
