Bhola livestock farmers report theft of 400 cattle and buffaloes
Livestock farmers in the char areas of Bhola, Bangladesh, have reported the theft of approximately 400 cattle and buffaloes. According to leaders of the Bhola Sadar Upazila Buffalo Owners Cooperative Society, the surge in thefts has occurred since August 6, 2024, across various riverine islands along the Meghna-Tetulia rivers.
Victims held a human chain protest in front of the Bhola Press Club to demand action. Their five-point demand includes stopping the thefts, arresting the criminal gangs, recovering the stolen livestock, and ensuring the safety of farmers. They submitted a memorandum to the Minister of Livestock through the Deputy Commissioner.
The affected areas include Madanpur, Char Kalupur, Char Gazipur, Char Bairagi, Charkali, Char Kanchra, Char Neyamatpur, Madhupur, and Char Kachia. Farmers expressed concern that if these thefts continue, the traditional buffalo rearing industry in Bhola will be severely damaged, potentially leading to financial ruin for hundreds of families.
