BHP Group reports 19% drop in copper production amid operational disruptions

BHP Group reported a 19% decline in copper production for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, totaling 400,700 metric tons. The decrease was attributed to lower planned ore grades, scheduled maintenance, and operational disruptions, including severe weather in Chile and a conveyor belt failure at the Carrapateena mine in Australia. The company also noted fatalities at its Escondida and Peak Downs sites.

Despite the drop in copper output, BHP maintained its full-year copper production guidance of 1.65 to 1.8 million metric tons. Higher copper prices, which rose approximately 50% year-on-year, helped offset the volume decline. In contrast, the company’s iron ore division saw growth, with production increasing 4% to 66.5 million metric tons, driven by strong performance in Western Australia.

Looking toward long-term growth, BHP announced an expanded mineral resource base at its Olympic Dam operation in South Australia. The company is exploring a large-scale underground block-cave mining option to increase South Australian copper production to 500,000 tonnes per annum by 2035, potentially reaching 650,000 tonnes by 2040.
