BHP's Jansen potash cost surge pushes shares down 3%

BHP Group disclosed that the Stage 2 cost estimate for its Jansen potash project in Saskatchewan, Canada, has risen by US$4.9‑US$5.4 billion, adding to an already approved budget of US$4.9 billion. The company will record an impairment of about US$2.3 billion in its FY‑26 results and has moved the Stage 2 production target to FY 2031, later than the original 2029 schedule. The news sent BHP shares down roughly 3 % on the day of the announcement, extending an 8 % decline from the 52‑week high.

Analysts note that while the cost blowout raises questions about project discipline, BHP’s core businesses—iron‑ore and copper—continue to generate strong cash flow, and the firm remains a major dividend‑paying blue‑chip in Australia. Recent valuations show BHP’s dividend yield at about 3.65 %, below its five‑year average of 6.86 %, and its share price has risen nearly 31 % since the start of 2025. Investors are weighing the long‑term potash diversification against short‑term financial impacts.
