BHRT warns blocked accounts jeopardize election coverage
The public broadcaster of Bosnia and Herzegovina, BHRT, has announced that its bank accounts have been blocked since August 21, 2026. This financial freeze has left the institution unable to meet its financial obligations, including employee salaries, health insurance, and production costs.
BHRT warns that this situation jeopardizes the ability to provide timely and objective coverage of the upcoming general election campaign, which is scheduled to begin on September 4, 2026. The broadcaster stated that the freeze threatens the citizens' right to be informed about the electoral process through a public service.
BHRT has called upon domestic and international institutions—including the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of BiH, the Office of the High Representative (OHR), the OSCE, and the EU Delegation—to intervene. The broadcaster alleges unequal treatment in the application of court decisions, noting that while RTRS has collected funds, BHRT is being denied access to RTV tax revenues and is facing significant financial hurdles.
